At 5290: Dog Days of Summer - July & August 2018

Our first home: 5290 Project

Summer time!

July & August brought the following exciting changes, starting with big ticket items:

  • Master bathroom progress: setting up the shower base, waterproofing, tiling!
  • 7.14.18 = WALL TAKEDOWN Day. I've been waiting to take this wall down since we configured the new kitchen/dining room... yes, since September!
  • Miscellaneous
    • Window replacements
    • Island wall built
    • Master bathroom pocket door installation!

Master bathroom -

The master bathroom is taking shape :) Here's a little taste of where we've come:

Picture from Realtor.com
Took down a few walls. Oh, and the fireplace separating these two rooms!
Building the walls/framework of the master bathroom
Sheetrock up.
New window!

Okay, so that's all in the past. Now, we have walls, paint and even a soft-close AND soft-open pocket door (to be installed shortly, see below)! But, the shower needs some TLC (i.e. waterproofing, built-in shelves, plumbing... and then, TILE!).

Ready for waterproofing!
Just like that: waterproof'd!
Except that it took 2 coats separated by ~12 hours and, essentially, 2 days.

Then, we tiled the floor of the master bathroom.

The 2x2 mosaic tile is a bit infuriating, but we both survived.
The walls and grout will happen another day, or month.

Wall TAKEDOWN on 7.14.2018

This was a long time comin' - and, boy, does it look different! GREAT different!

Here's the kitchen from Realtor.com pictures:

We thoughtfully prepared for the demolition of the wall with the oven/fridge/microwave on it:

All available seating (church pew, table and chairs) in the house was moved to the living room.
Fridge was moved into the master bedroom.
Oven and one salvaged cabinet moved into the basement/bike shop cave.
Pantry to the basement as well.

Got 'er all cleaned up, threw down some cardboard and, in a matter of hours, the wall was gone!

Here are a few BEFORE/AFTER from different viewpoints:

Took out the upper cabinets and called it good enough. For now.

Next up, replacing windows!

Kitchen window #1 (removed).

Kitchen window #2 (replaced).
Needs to be a bit shorter because that's where the sink will be in the new kitchen design!

Finally, living room windows (x2) - just straight up swapped out for newer and better:
Giant window that Canyon looooooves to look out.

Built up the wall where the kitchen ISLAND will be!

Lasty, Sam's fancy soft-close and soft-open POCKET DOOR installation for the master bathroom!

I regret not getting a video of the smile on Sam's face when he watched it open and close for the first time.

I think that about covers July and August...

More adventures to come.. Maybe soon we'll have a kitchen? A couch? Lights? More to sit on than a church pew?
