At 5290: Winter 2018

Our first home: 5290 Project

Winter months of 2018: January & February 2018

Herein begins Phase 2 of this house project... the Master suite and family room. This Phase starts with a lot of demo!

To give a baseline, these are pictures from the posting at Realtor.com:

MASTER SUITE: demo time! Here are photos to demonstrate the start of the journey to our Master bed and bath ...
Here are some before pictures. What was once a small room (with excellent choice in window shades) and 2 small closet-type rooms ...

First, take out the walls of the closet-type rooms ...

Majority of the walls torn down.

Now, onto the tongue-and-groove walls. Not easy! But, goooood-bye!

Removed all the tongue-and-groove from the walls.

Had our first mega-fire to celebrate!
 to

Much more to do: remove carpet, remove hallway wall, remove hall door, take down ceiling tiles (including removal of every last staple), rip up floor tile ...

 to

Don't mind the 1/4 of the wall that's missing. It will be addressed below with the family room :)
Mas y mas demo... the hallway must go!

No more hallway, no more closet-type rooms. No more anything, really.

Canyon is not too sure about that idea. But, we're in too deep now!

FAMILY ROOM: The nice, empty and clean family room, complete with newspaper from 1992 scattering the floor, was quickly turned into Sam's "cut room." Boy did it fill up fast!

Annnnd, now ... good-bye 9ft x 3.5ft brick fireplace!
I do not really remember whose idea it was to begin with, but we ran with it - no going back! No regrets, either.

Sooooo many bricks!!

Now, time to remove the 412 cinder blocks used as it's base, sides and backing ...

But, FIRST, we need to tackle the chimney and roof. Thanks, Doug, for your help!

And, here's where that 1/4 of the wall comes down... heads-up!

And the rest of the fireplace is GONE! What an absolute mess.
And quite a way to spend our Valentine's Day :)

Just like that ... THIS

Those pictures essentially represent our January and February 2018. On one last note, we had some baller fires:

At 5290: Fall 2017

Our first home: 5290 Project

Fall 2017: October through December 2017

Here is some of our continued progress on the house project! This post is a pretty random assortment of a variety of jobs and rooms, including the basement, trim work, interior doors and the start to a guest bedroom.

But, first, here's a glimpse of the gorgeous fall colors from our backyard :)

The BASEMENT got some much-needed paint and accessories:

    BEFORE ~

AFTER ~

Replaced one of four windows (to start). And, built a place to store chopped wood for the winter months ...

Finally, the beginnings of our bike shop and new washer and dryer:

TRIM: Next up, we worked on trim! We spent a day milling the trim in Sam's dad's (Doug) workshop in Grand Rapids. Then, painted and painted and painted and painted ...

INTERIOR DOORS: You bet, interior doors. Took a bit, but now we have them! They look quite classy with the black hardware and our trim!

Like I said, a start to our guest bedroom...

That was how we spent most of our Fall 2017.

Our next blog post will be embarking on PHASE 2, which includes much, MUCH demolition and a little construction :)

We kept mighty busy at the start of 2018! Stay tuned ...
