Olympic National Park: Part One

Lake Quinault and Big Trees:
We spent two days up in Olympic National Park, it was amazing.  We only saw one small part of the park on this trip but we saw so much great scenery we are going to do two blog posts.

Friday night we drove up to Lake Quinault and camped at Falls Creek.
This is Lake Quinault Lodge, it was really a beautiful rustic building.
We camped near the Lake and Lodge in this spot with a giant tree right in our backyard.
The Olympics are real Squatchy

Saturday morning we checked out this waterfall near our camp.  This was the only waterfall on this trip, it was all about big trees.

These forests are just huge, the pics don't do them justice.

Mary inside of the Quinault Big Cedar.

When asked to look back towards the camera this is how Mary responds.

We drove up the Washington Coast and had a nice picnic on the beach near Destruction Island

Our third "Big Tree" of the day.

On the road to The Duncan Cedar tree, the next big one on our list.

This whole area was clear-cut in 1930.  At the time the loggers realized this tree was the third largest in the world so they decided not to cut it down.  However, standing alone it didn't take long for lighting and the wind to destroy this huge tree.  Sadly. there are only a few living branches left.

We swung through Forks, Washington (setting of the Twilight books) and had Bloody Mary's - we didn't realize at the time how ironic that was.  Also, if you really like the books, we suggest you don't go to this town.
